Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Alternate Routes is committed to creating an outlet for critical social research and interdisciplinary inquiry. A broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches are encouraged, including works from academics, labour, and community researchers. Alternate Routes is a publicly accessible academic journal and encourages provocative works that advance or challenge our understandings of historical and contemporary socio-political, economic and cultural issues. In addition to full-length articles, we publish review essays sparked by previously published material, interviews, commentaries, and book reviews.

SUBMISSIONS MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY TO “editor@alternateroutes.ca.” BEFORE SUBMITTING PLEASE SEE OUR AUTHOR GUIDELINES.(NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT ARTICLES THROUGH THIS WEBSITE). There are no fees for submission. 

AR publishes primarily special-themed issues and therefore requests that submissions be related to the current call for papers.

PLEASE NOTE: AS A RESULT OF LIMITED FINANCIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE RESOURCES WE CANNOT EDIT YOUR PAPERS FOR ADHERANCE TO OUR FORMATTING AND STYLE REQUIREMENTS. SHOULD PAPERS NOT ADHERE TO OUR REQUIREMENTS, WE WILL RETURN ALL MATERIALS PRIOR TO COMMENCING ANY REVIEWS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.

ABSTRACT: Your abstract should be limited to 200 words or less. Use 1 inch spacing for the left and right margins, and 1 inch for top and bottom margins. Include author name with attached footnote outlining brief biography.

BODY: This is where your paper begins proper. Indent one tab space for every new paragraph. Please use  Arial 12 pt. font. Figures and images must be included in the body of your text (where applicable), and as a separate attachment.
